Summer Fun in the Sun

Hey girl, pass the sunscreen.

What’s in your beach bag? There are so many sunscreens out there how do you know which ones to use? Which ones are safe for babies and kids????

Protecting your children’s skin is so important. Luckily, there are so many things that you can do, from checking your sunscreen ingredients, choosing clothing and swimsuits that cover their skin, and staying in the shade.

Sunscreen has been all over the media lately since the FDA decided to propose changes to its sunscreen regulations. Check out this article if you want to find out a little more.

I choose to use mineral based sunscreen. I always looks for Zinc Oxide as an active ingredient. Zinc Oxide is great because it is a mineral that works as a mirror to block both UVA and UVB sun rays. Since Zinc Oxide’s particles are too large to be absorbed into the skin, it is deemed the most safe sunscreen by the Environmental Working Group . My favorite sunscreens to use on my kids are Badger Baby and Blue Lizard.

Additional Skin Protection

There are so many additional ways beyond sunscreen to protect your little one’s skin. Of course there is always, stay in the shade, but that’s not always possible. Here are a few easy ways to bring shade to your kids!

1. I love love love UV shirts. My kids wear them all the time during the summer months. All the UV protection and none of the chemicals! I also prefer long sleeve or some type of sleeved swimsuit over a more traditional strappy swimsuit.

2. Sun hats are also a summer must. Not only do they protect your child’s face from sunburn, but also their ears and scalp. Kids often have very thin hair and need that extra layer of protection.

3. Another great sun protector is a sun tent. It is a must have if you are headed to the beach with your littles. It is perfect for napping and even picnicking in.
