Is your baby teething or just fussy? Who knows! We all take our best guesses at what is wrong and how we can help our littles ones out, but in reality, we just don’t know for sure. There are however, a few tell tale signs we can look for to help us guess if our babies may be teething.
Not all babies show signs of teething. My Boston Boy never had any signs of teething. One day I looked into his mouth and there they were, two pearly whites. Now that was easy! Gracie Girl on the other hand, has been drooling since she was 3 months old and has a random fussy day or two here and there, which leads me to believe it could be teething pain. But still no teeth at 6 month. Both Boston and Elliana didn’t pop a tooth until 9 months, so I am actually not too surprised that Grace hasn’t yet either.
Here are a few signs you can look for in your little one if you are wondering if they could be teething.
⭐ Drooling
⭐ Swollen or bulging gums
⭐ A tooth visible popping through or below the gums
⭐ General abnormal fussiness
⭐ Trouble sleeping
⭐ Trying to bite, chew, and suck on everything
⭐ Rubbing her face
⭐ Not wanting to eat
⭐ Grabbing her ears
If you notice 2-3 or more of these symptoms at the same time, more than likely your baby is teething. It could however be something else, so use your mom intuition and have your baby checked by your pediatrician if symptoms seem to last or be more than simple teething. (Reference, Baby Center)
Now that you know your baby is teething. What should you do about it?
No one wants to see their baby having a hard time or being uncomfortable. So the best thing to do is figure out how to make your baby feel better, and do that! Here are a few things I do to help ease Grace’s discomfort.
- Snuggles! The number one way to help comfort Grace is to snuggle her! I end up wearing her around the house all day long! I use a Tulle baby carrier as well as a Boba wrap and I love both! I also give her a little grace at bedtime. Extra snuggles and even sleeping with mom if she needs it.
- Grace is always wearing a drooling bib! At least this way I can keep her dry and maybe a bit more comfortable that way! We love these beautiful organic cotton 10-Pack Girl Bandana Bibs (affiliate) sold by Little Munchkins a small company run by a blogger like me! She also has a boy (affiliate) version.
- She loves her Baltic Amber Teething Necklace (affiliate). It looks cool, and I think it works too. Although I know some parents keep these on 24/7, I do take it off of her for bath and bedtime. This necklace looks great on boys and girls alike!
- Not only is Grace a fan of the amber necklaces, but she also loves her Silicone Teething Necklace (affiliate). She’s so stylish 😉. She has her own and I also have one to wear as well. But, to be honest we use her necklace much more than mine, but we do use both. I could not find her exact teething necklace on Amazon, but I linked a similar one. I bought Grace’s about a year and a half ago for Elliana when she was teething.
- With my direct supervision, I also give her a whole peeled carrot. It is perfect for gnawing! I do keep a close eye on her. Especially after she’s been gnawing for a while, she can sometimes get a price off, but I just remove it right away and let her back at the large piece. I love this because it’s natural, fun, and very effective!
- A silicon Baby Fruit Feeder (affiliate) is also a must. We have the old mesh one, which is fine, but much more difficult to clean. Grace loves anything frozen in it. You can freeze any baby purée you’ve made or even breast milk. Freeze your purée (check out What Grace Ate, for some purée recipes) or milk in an ice cube tray and then put it in there for a baby popsicle. I’ve also put frozen banana chunks or apple slices as well.
- Lastly, you will need a favorite teething toy. Grace loves her Sophie (affiliate) giraffe and also her key set. I think she loves the noise they make!
These teething supplies are great. They may help to ease the discomfort, but nothing can fully take away the teething process. Expect to see your baby’s first teeth anywhere between 4-9 months. And remember teething lasts from that point all the way until 2-3 years, as your toddler will be cutting those 2 year molars anytime between 18 months and 3 years of age.
The teething phase can be a trying time, but go into it prepared and armed with some supplies to ease the discomfort and you will make it to the other side in no time!
